[sum] public & privacy

In this week, we talk about public & privacy.

Surveillance is the monitoring of behavior. Although surveillance can be a useful tool for law enforcement and security companies, many people have concerns about the loss of privacy. They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Today some artists and art groups concerned with surveillance.

Data Surveillance (Dataveillance) is the systematic use of personal data systems in the investigation or monitoring of the actions or communications of one or more persons.

surveillance model is built upon visual metaphors and derives from historical experiences of secret police surveillance or capture model is built upon linguistic metaphors and takes as its prototype the deliberate reorganization of industrial work activities to allow computers to track them [the work activities] in real time

captured activity in comparison with surveillance is assembled from standardized “parts” from an institutional setting.

Privacy in definition is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves and thereby reveal themselves selectively.

Lawrence Lessig talks on the merits of inefficiency an inefficiency that makes it harder for these technologies to be misused. It is hard to argue that less is more.
we build into such constitutions structures of restraint, that will check, and limit the efficiency of government, to protect against the tyranny of government.

Oscar H. Gandy, Jr. talks on the merits of inefficiency data mining systems which are designed to facilitate the identification and classification of individuals into distinct groups or segments.

Life where less is monitored is a life more private; and life where less can (legally perhaps) be searched is also a life more private. said Lessig on architecture of privacy.

what does your web browser reveal about you? cookies are information that a web server stores on the machine running a web browser. encryption is the process of transforming information (referred to as plaintext) using an algorithm (called cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge, usually referred to as a key.

search engines on the web make many things (sometimes surprisingly) public. “data mining” is one form of “elaboration”. data mining is an applied statistical technique. data mining efforts are directed toward the generation of rules for the classification of objects. data mining is used for market research and other commercial purposes, science and intelligence gathering.

technologies and architectures are important influences on the production and change of private and public space. but, they do not independently determine what is public and what is private (to think they do is called technological determinism).

my think of this subject is that. we have to be protected privacy. Once we were outside, we are pictured by CCTV anywhere. I just hate it. For some reason, I'm unpleasant to be supervised from unknown area. But It is needed for us to protect us.
